KAMPALA, (CAJ News) – UGANDAN football authorities have threatened sanctions against unruly fans, teams and inept referees following unsavory incidents in the local game.
The threat follows the violence marred a league encounter between champions Sports Club Villa Jogoo and Vipers.
The match at the St Mary’s Stadium in Kitende on Saturday ended 1-0 in favor of Vipers.
Incensed away fans damaged the barriers separating them from the VIP section accusing referee Alex Muhabi of biased officiating.
Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) President Eng. Moses Magogo, said the association had noticed with concern over “unacceptable” incidents that would derail all efforts of rebuilding the league.
“We will therefore undertake our roles without fear or favour,” Magogo said in Kampala.
He said actions of violence and hooliganism, inciting violence by officials and players, poor performance of the referees and doping cases had already been observed in the league.
Magogo pointed out in latest communication from the Federation of International Football Associations, functions of anti-doping, club licensing, refereeing and disciplinary measures were an exclusive obligation of the local federation.
“The rules are very clear on all these cases and we will implement the rules to the dot.”
The negativity has marred progress made by the country in recent months.
Uganda are the reigning continental National Team of the Year after qualifying for the Africa Cup of Nations for the first time since 1978.
Goalkeeper Dennis Onyango is the reigning locally-based African Footballer of the Year after helping South African side, Mamelodi Sundowns, to the Champions League.
