Kowie Bowls Banter

Report submitted by Mike Tomlinson

On Friday, the Kowie Bowls Club hosted the “Inter Districts” competition with all seven districts being Eastern Province, Frontier, East London Districts, Eastern Areas, Midlands, Ciskei and North Eastern Districts participating.

Some fantastic bowls were played during the four-day tournament despite a rainy start on the first day.

At the end of Round 3, Eastern Province was on top with 4.25 points and a 103-shot profit followed by Frontier, East London and Eastern Areas.

Then at the end of Round 5, there were some changes with Eastern Areas on top with 6 points and a 65-shot profit followed by East London, Frontier and E. P. in that order.

But the Frontier team rallied to move from the third spot after Round 5 to pip Eastern Areas by a narrow margin of 0,333 points. Eastern Province finished in the third place.

On Tuesday, this week we had a very good turnout with six rinks of fours playing. Fortunately, no extras pitched that would not have been able to fit in because the greens have been marked for the Mini Districts competition starting on Friday. In a very one-sided game Jacques Krige’s team of Don Munroe, Gerald Mills and Roy Reynolds trumped Pieter Stegmann’s team by a full house 10 points and plenty of shot profit to be presented with the “Megabucks”.  Looking at these two teams on paper they were very evenly balanced with Pieter’s team not having an answer for anything the opposition did. The runner-up position went to Lee Botma over Dick Schuurman in another 10-pointer for the day. There was another 10 pointer on the day with the remaining three games being much tighter games.

The club was a hive of activity on Thursday with Jonine and her team spent all day in the kitchen preparing meals for the weekend’s Men’s Mini Districts competition starting on Friday, they only came out of the kitchen after all the bowlers had come off the greens. Today another good turnout pitched for the Ocean Basket competition with a combination of play on six rinks. We played pairs which were won by Tony Brown’s team of Lennie Clark in defeating Peter Ford’s team by a full house 10 points and an 18 shot profit. The next winner was the trips competition with Dick Schuurman’s team of Jean Botma and Keith Benson defeating Bob Ford’s trip by 8 points to 2 with a shot profit of 9. We also gave a runner-up prize which was won by Delene Deenik’s trip of Sally Moffat and Roy Reynolds who defeated Rob Owsley’s trip by 8 points to 2 with a shot profit of 7. All three teams received Ocean Basket voucher in today’s competition, thank you to our sponsors.

There were no club bowls on Saturday afternoon because of the competition and some of our bowlers who were not on duty went and played at Port Alfred Club.

Duties for week 25th Sept – 1st Oct

Greens: Roll – Bob Ford, Mark – Gerald Mills & Pieter Stegmann, Tabs: Cash – Jacky Watson and Bar: Stan Richter & Dave Tyrrell.
