Stellies Facebook Video Goes Viral – Man Allegedly Called A ‘Hotnot’ And Punched In The Face

Story from: 2oceansvibe.com

Damn, there’s nothing like a dose of drunk racism to kill a night out on the town.

On Saturday, 24-year-old Terence Makapan posted on Facebook. He alleges he was the victim of verbal racism and physical violence the night before while in Stellenbosch.

Here’s what apparently happened: On his way to the jol with friends, he heard someone call him a “hotnot” – a derogatory and offensive term for a coloured person – and when he turned around to confront the group from which the word was “uttered”, he was greeted with a punch to the nose:

“Early this morning, myself and 3 friends were walking to Springboks when we passed a small group of white guys. We heard the word “HOTNOT” being uttered and we immediately stopped in our tracks. We demanded to know who uttered the word. One of them tried to get us to just walk on but we refused. Next thing I know, I’m being approached by one of other his friends with a rock in one hand he proceeds to punch me with his free hand.”

Makapan recorded the rest of the incident:

Since posting the video on social media, Makapan has received a flurry of support, as well as a selection of equally offensive remarks. People have no chill.

He has since reported the incident to the police.

While Makapan is not a student at Stellies, it is alleged the suspects are. According to Times LIVE, Martin Viljoen‚ spokesperson for Stellenbosch University‚ said:

“Stellenbosch University (SU) maintains a policy of zero tolerance with regard to the violation of human rights‚ victimisation in any form‚ racism‚ classism‚ sexism and all other forms of discrimination. The University will also not hesitate to act against anyone making themselves guilty in this regard.

“It is thus with great concern that the University learnt of an alleged racist incident over the weekend in the town of Stellenbosch in which SU students and friends were allegedly subjected to racial slurs and being attacked. It is contrary to the values of our University and the culture of respect and human dignity that we would like to foster.

“It is unclear at this stage whether the incident took place on campus and whether it is in fact Stellenbosch University students that made slurs or attacked Mr Terence Makapan and his friends.

“Those affected are encouraged to lay charges at not only the South African Police Service‚ but also at Campus Security so that it can be followed up and investigated.”

On speaking out about the incident, Makapan explained:

[We] are doing this because we want people to see that something can be done. Something WILL be done. So many cases go unreported because the affected party feels like nothing will come of it. We should just shut our mouths, “walk on” and “get over the past”. No! This guy and his ilk will keep doing what they’re doing because they think they can get away with it and I’ll make sure that we make an example out of him.. They’re everywhere. Not just in Stellenbosch but with this post/case we will make every last one of them aware that they’re time is up.

Fair enough.
