Do You Electric?

Story from: Digital Street

Volvo are making a serious play for a piece of the electric car industry, a market surging forward in the wake of fossil fuel uncertainty. The Polestar is their new battery powered vision.

General Motors, Nissan and Toyota began the electric craze with modest hatch-back and sedan offerings, and then Tesla re-invented the game with their range of aesthetic and performance masterpieces. Once it was obvious that electric had morphed from a fad to a future necessity, Mercedes-Benz debuted their e-range, and BMW revealed both the i3 and i8.

Acquired by the Volvo Cars group in 2015, the Polestar brand has benefitted from its Swedish alliance. Engineering, technology and economies of scale have received inspiration and know-how injections. The new Polestar is envisaged as a stand-alone electric world leader, and will not carry the Volvo logo.

AutoTraderSA reached out to Volvo Car South Africa for comment, curious as to when the Polestar would hit local highways.

“It is still very early to discuss Polestar in any product sense, but yes, we will likely see their cars here,” said Brent Ellis, media relations manager for Volvo Car SA. “Volumes and model mix, of course, can only be confirmed much closer to launch dates, which have not yet been confirmed.”
