KHARTOUM, (CAJ News) –  THE number of civilians injured during the worsening civil war in South Sudan has doubled over the past year.

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) disclosed it had evacuated 180 people with war injuries since the beginning of the year.

This follows an extremely volatile year in which the humanitarian organisation evacuated 834 war-wounded people and treated 1 685 patients in ICRC-supported hospitals.

Guido Serge Verslout, thea physiotherapist for the ICRC, said this was twice the number evacuated with war wounds in 2016.

He said most victims sustained bullet wounds, mostly in the legs.

“Most of the wounds were already infected. We had to do a lot of debridement to clean the wounds and heal the fractures, Verslout said.

South Sudan, the world’s newest country after attaining independence from Sudan in 2011, is gripped by civil strife.

It emanates from a 2013 power struggle between President Salva Kiir and then-deputy, Riek Machar, who was accused of plotting a coup.

An estimated 300 000 civilians have been killed.

The war has displaced almost 4 million people, which represents a third of the East African country’s total population.

Apart from providing healthcare, the ICRC is fighting hunger in South Sudan.

“There is no way we can leave a country like this and its population, said Celine Degen, ICRC head in South Sudan.
