NAIROBI, (CAJ News) – VICTIMS of the deadly Kenya elections held a decade ago are demanding compensation ahead of the latest round poll scheduled for next month.Among the aggrieved citizens are victims of gang-rape, while others saw parents and relatives murdered during a violent spree that claimed the lives of over 1 500 civilians and displaced 600 000 people. The East African country is preparing for polls on August 8 but more than two years after President Uhuru Kenyatta announced the establishment of a KSh10 billion( R1, 288 billion) fund to help victims of past injustices, including victims of the 2007 post-election violence, government has not developed a plan how the fund would be implemented.Victims have still not received financial assistance, medical care or counselling. Perpetrators have not been punished.Parliament is yet to adopt the report of the Truth, Justice, and Reconciliation Commission (TRCJ) established to help heal historical grievances dating from before the election violence. The report also proposes reparations for victims.A month before Kenya heads to the polls again, close to 100 survivors, together with representatives of civil society groups, have met in Nairobi to press for the implementation of the TJRC report.“The message is clear,” Agnes Odhiambo, a women’s rights advocate, said.“Kenya cannot truly move forward without justice for victims, including the payment of reparations. All Kenyans should stand in solidarity with them.”The run-up to the poll has been characterised by violence and allegations of vote rigging, raising fears of another disputed poll outcome.
