KINSHASA, (CAJ News) – MORE than 300 000 civilians are displaced from their homes as conflict from South Sudan spills into the neighbouring Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).The rebels and government troops are transposing their armed clashes into the Congolese region of Kengezi Base. This is against an already unstable background marked by the revitalization of a local armed group, the Alliance for the Liberation of the Congolese People, which is taking advantage of the weak presence of the army and the police.
Some 308 800 civilians are displaced, a majority of them living in foster families. A number are surviving in spontaneous settlements. The United Nations Humanitarian Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs expressed concern the security situation could degenerate into the Aru territory, also along the border with South Sudan,if authorities take no action to enhance security.Elsewhere, in southern Irumu, militiamen of the Ituri Patriotic Resistance Force have continued to commit abuses on the population in many localities.”Military operations have shown their limit and have caused too many collateral victims among the population,” a UN spokesman stated.DRC and South Sudan are experiencing worsening conflict. In South Sudan, a civil war has led to the killing of thousands of civilians and displacement of 2 million.
DRC is overwhelmed by running battles involving radicals and the army. The skirmishes have uprooted over 1 million people in the Kasai region in recent months. some 50 000 victims have sought refuge in Angola.
