LUANDA, (CAJ News) – ANGOLA is planning to repatriate more than 30 000 refugees from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
Government officials believe the crisis in the troubled DRC has eased, paving way for the returns. Some 1 500 Congolese citizens have voluntarily returned to their areas of origin.
The Coordinator of the Angolan team of experts monitoring the exodus of refugees, Alfredo Quintino, admitted the possibility of repatriation of thousands of refugees after concluding there was stability in areas formerly in tribal political conflict in DRC.
He was speaking at Tshikapa town during a bilateral meeting between the provinces of Lunda Norte (Angola) and Kasai (DRC).
The provincial governor of Lunda Norte, Ernesto Muangala, and his Congolese counterpart, Marc Manyanga Ndambo, also participated at the meeting.
The trip aimed at assessing the draft agreement that will be signed by the parties, with subsequent communication to the United Nations bodies in Angola.
According to Quintino, the repatriations would not hinder the transfer of the remaining Congolese citizens to the shelter centre in Tshikapa, which is under the supervision of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).
Kasai province has five districts, which share 750 kilometers with Lunda Norte. Kasai has more than 29 million people. The areas are beset by conflict that has claimed the lives of an estimated 1 000 people since government forces killed a tribal leader in August 2016.
