Congolese massacresFrom JEAN KASSONGO in Kinshasa, DRC
KINSHASA, (CAJ News) – FORMER colonial master France is concerned about political assassinations and detentions of opposition figures in the Congo Brazzaville.
The central African country is in crisis since 2016 when the government of President Denis Sassou Nguesso embarked on a crackdown on rebels.
There have been violations within the exercise as civilians have been massacred, property has been looted and destroyed.
Several opposition leaders, among them those that have challenged Nguesso during elections have been arrested and charged under controversial circumstances.
Michel Pika, André Okombi Salissa, Jean-Marie Michel Mokoko and Paulin Makaya, whom France has termed political prisoners.
Former colonel Pika holds dual Congolese and American nationality is prosecuted because of his relationship with the ex-general Mokoko, also in arbitrary detention since March.
The French Human Rights Observers Committee (CODHO France) decried the series of arrests between May 2016 and March this year.
More than 80 000 people have fled their homes since the government began its military operation there last year.
N’Sii Luanda, president of CODHO France, said, “Authorities are very much mistaken about the time of the war, partly by continuously massacring civilians, plundering their property and destroying their villages.”
