Teko tells us all about age cheating

Story from: TownPress

Age cheating in South African has always been a taboo topic, with many fans suspecting Benedict Vilakazi as a player to be a lot older than he is. But did you see what Teko Modise had to say about him in his new book?

The former Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder, who is currently 35 years old, was largely suspected of lying about his age during his playing career, but nothing was confirmed.

Now, in the Cape Town City’s midfielder’s recently released tell-all book, The Curse of Teko Modise, the 34-year-old has revealed that he once refused to play with “Tso” in a township tournament because he was one of several children who received fake IDs.

One passage in the book read: “Teko was amazed at how many wrongly aged boys were playing in this tournament. The issue with a business arrangement like this is that the deal is permanent.

“Your new ID had your photo, name, and birthplace. Everything was accurate, except your date of birth. The permanence and shadiness of the deal scared Teko off, so he decided not to play with Tso that day.”

Months later, another tournament took place. Teko’s side was set to face Vilakazi’s, but the former Ria Stars player refused to play.

According to his book, Modise told Tso: “Chief, I was there that day. I know what happened. We not gonna play you guys – you guys are over-age. Most of you have fake IDs.”

Vilakazi’s career was decorated with trophies, but it was also dented by sex scandals and age cheating allegations.
