Kowie Bowls Banter

Report submitted by Mike Tomlinson

Tuesday 11th we had a turnout of +30 players with some forgetting to fill in names on their score card for the day and your honourable captain played the wrong monthly sponsored competition, this will be rectified in the coming week. We played Megabucks and Rodney Gradwell’s team of trips Roger Purdon and Keith Benson defeated Dick Schuurman’s team by 10 points and a large shot profit to be presented with the “big bucks”.  Today’s runner up John Hubbard’s team of trips defeated Mike Tomlinson’s team also by a full house 10 points and + 7.

On Wednesday we played the Timm & Vroom Cup Competitions at Port Alfred and the Men’s teams won 2 and lost 2 of their games with PA having a positive shot of 12. Overall Kowie leads the comp on 17 points + 17 shot profit to PA’s 15 points. Our ladies had 2 very good wins on the day to share the comp on 8 points each with PA holding the positive shot profit. There are 2 rounds to go in this competition to the end of the year.

On Thursday we had a very small turn out and the Megabucks competition was not played for.

We also started our Men’s Novice Club Championships with all 6 entrants taking part in some excellent bowls. The 3 games played lasted in total 74 ends with all being very close games. On Friday the Novice Singles carried on with 4 players being available and playing 2 games each with play starting at 13h00 and finishing at 17h30 with no game to date shorter than 20 ends. The standard of bowls in this competition has been of the highest standard and the comp will carry on next Thursday and should be completed the following week dependant on weather.

On the week end the EP Men’s 4’s took place at Port Alfred Club and our Chris Avis team of S. Rohrs, Alan Sheridan and Dave Thomas participating but were not successful winning one out of their 3 games but this was very good experience for our bowlers. You will receive the full report in the PA report.

With this happening, we had tabs bowls at our club with the EP Bowls President, Brian Buchanan, Moyra and Gary Vermaak playing with us. We played “Snowball” competition with the score of “6” being drawn and none of the 5 rinks was able to match this score so we roll the prize money over to the next round.

Duties 24th – 30th July:

Greens: Roll – Pieter Stegmann, Mark – Roger Purdon & Roy Reynolds, Tabs: Cash – Lucia Nell and Bar: Mike & PeeWee Tomlinson (who replace Basil and Allan).
