Bowls Port Alfred

GreensTalk covers results from the two bowling clubs in Port Alfred as reported by the clubs.

Nite Bowls Banter – Round 6:

Last Friday night was round 6 of the Nite Bowls series in magnificent weather, everyone was running around in shirt sleeves with the spectators turning out in force. The crowds seem to be growing and this week the “pom poms” turned up and the kids were rounded up into a cheering block. This does wonders for the Lions Club sales on these nights as they sold out all their hamburgers this past week, we thank them for the service that they provide to all on and around the greens.

At the start, I had to run around arranging for a spare team to play against one of our participants who had no opposition. I thank the 4 people for putting up the hands and helping me out by giving Country Meat a game even though they got full points for their walk over. It gave them a reason to be at bowls.

The bowls were very keen again with section A having only one full house 6 points which went to Trellidor for their 6 / +15 but having won the “best performer” previously they could not win again. “Performer” prize went to B Section only for the  2nd time and Leach Pharmacy who have battled to get points in the last 3 rounds, well this week they were in top form with their 6 / +6 to give them the prize.

The teams headed into the clubhouse for prize giving and refreshments, we started off with the Swindle Board Raffle sponsored by Pick ‘n Pay and last week’s winner Warren from Trellidor had been in front of the queue when he picked his board numbers because he won the bottle of Captain Morgan for the second week in a row. Bet you can not do it a 3rd time. Next came the “roll over” competition with the 4 x ends being drawn, the score was “5” and the luckiest team of the night was Trellidor who for the 1st time in 6 weeks were the only team to have the correct score. They won the R360.00 in the kitty so next week we start with an R60 kitty.

We go to the last of the round robin competition [round 7] with the top 4 positions in each section.

Section A

  1. Trellidor – 32 points 51 shot profit
  2. Distinctive Kitchens – 27 points 33 shot profit
  3. MR Financials – 22 points 23 shot profit
  4. DP Engineering – 22 points 10 shot profit

Section B

  1. Emonti – 28 points 46 shot profit
  2. Happy Veg – 24 points -1 shot profit
  3. Kenny’s Sports Bar – 23 points 39 shot profit
  4. Country Meat Market – 21 points -7 shot profit

Finals week on Friday 31st Mar will be a cross section between the A and B sections.

Kowie Bowls Banter

On the second Tuesday of the month, we played our Super SPAR competition with a good turn out and Jackie Kriel’s team of Allan Sheridan and Louise Fleming defeated Pieter Stegmann’s team by 9 points and 9 shot profit to win the Spar vouchers for the day. The runner-up was Rob Owsley’s team who beat Bob Ford’s team. On the day we had one makeup game of the Club Mixed trips take place as well as playing in the Spar competition. Lee Botma’s team defeated Siegie Rohrs’s team in a game that Botma’s team was well up on the 12 end then Rohrs’s team started coming back and on the 17th end were just 4 shots behind but then the Botma team pulled it out the bag.

On Thursday we had another good field for our Ocean Basket competition and Jackie Kriel is on a roll at the moment with her team of Roger Purdon, Gerald Mills and Margie Thomas who defeated Siegie Rohrs’s team by 2 points and 14 shot profit to win Ocean Basket vouchers. The runner-up position went Keith Kolesky’s team of trips who defeated Mike Tomlinson by 2 points and a shot profit of 8 to also receive Ocean Basket Vouchers.

On Saturday we played 2 games of our Men’s Open Singles for members who will not be available for our next scheduled date. Dick Schuurman defeated Michael v d Sandt quite convincingly and Keith Kolesky had to work hard to take out Stephen Minnaar. Tabs bowls we played Snowball Competition and the score drawn for the 4 ends selected was 5 and lucky Mike Long was the only team that had the correct score so Mike and his team of 4’s shared R100. Now we have to start on building that kitty again.

Duties for week 27th Mar – 2nd Apr:

Greens: Roll – Michael van der Sandt, Mark – Gerald Mills and Mike Pfotenhauer, Tabs: Cash – Marian Walwyn, Tabs – Charles Louw and Bar: Keith and Lynn Kolesky.
