KINSHASA, (CAJ News) – FLOODS and mudslides have left at least 37 people dead in the crisis-torn Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

The inclement weather follows heavy rains that have pummeled several areas of Kinshasa, the capital city with a population of 11 million people.

Rains have been most severe in the shanty towns, sparking fears the overflowing rivers could worsen a cholera crisis that has killed hundreds in the Central African country in recent months.

“Over the next 24 hours, moderate to light rain may continue to affect the already affected areas of the country,â€ a spokesperson of the European Commission’s Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations, said on Tuesday.

The deadly weather conditions are the latest in a series of crisis afflicting Africa’s second-biggest country by size.

DRC has battled escalating militancy since late 2016 when President Joseph Kabila, in power since 2001, stayed in power despite the lapse of his two-year term.

He has faced rising protests from the opposition, with military quashing the demonstrations.

Thousands have fled the crises to neighbouring countries while over 4 million are displaced inside the country, the highest displacement toll in the continent.

About 1 000 Congolese succumbed to cholera over the past year.
