ABUJA, (CAJ News) – MORE than 6 000 Nigerians have reportedly been killed during land clashes allegedly perpetrated by Fulani herdsmen.

The government of President Muhammadu Buhari is allegedly complicit in the bloodshed amid indications the livestock rearers have not been brought to book.

Buhari is a Hausa-Fulani from Daura in the northern Katsina State, which is not exempt from the clashes between the armed herdsmen and villagers.

The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (Huriwa) said from a study it conducted in the last two years, thousands of innocent lives had been lost.

In the latest bloodbath, seven policemen were killed last Thursday night in a village in the northeastern Adamawa State while trying to repel an
attack by suspected armed herdsmen.

Emmanuel Onwubiko, Huriwa coordinator, lamented that villagers had been forced to take the law into their own hands as indicated by some reprisal attacks against the herdsmen lately.

“We strongly condemn any such revenge killings targeting innocent Fulani citizens of Nigeria, he said.

Onwubiko urged law enforcement agencies to prevent a recurrence of violence by arresting all involved in the deadly skirmishes.

The deadly clashes are also linked to the religious tensions in the West African country, whose population of 190 million is equally divided between Christians and Muslims.

The herdsmen are mostly Muslim while villagers are Christian.

Buhari has condemned the attacks by the Fulani and ordered the Nigerian army to intervene.
