KINSHASA, (CAJ News) – AUTHORITIES in Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) have been urged to investigate the violent police crackdown after a man was shot dead and hundreds arrested during protests against President Joseph Kabila.

The police, blamed for partisanship to the beleaguered leader, shot dead the man, arbitrarily arrested more than 200 protesters and injured dozens more in the capital Kinshasa and the eastern town of Goma.

At least 100 people remain in detention following the protests that took place in multiple cities across the Central African country.

Sarah Jackson, regional director of rights group Amnesty International, said the DRC must promptly launch effective and independent investigations into the killing and injuries as well as bring all responsible law enforcers to justice.

“This wanton disregard for protesters’ lives and the unlawful use of force cannot be tolerated. The use of firearms against unarmed protesters contravenes DRC’s obligations under international law, Jackson said.

She called for the unconditional release of protesters.

DRC is characterised by lawlessness after Kabila stayed in power despite the expiry of his term last year.

Fresh elections are now set for late 2018.

More than 4 million people are displaced from their homes as a result of clashes between the army and rebel groups opposed to Kabila’s presidency.
