After reporting on this matter this morning, the Department has since established clearer facts relating to this incident. We can confirm the following:

At 01H10 this morning a Western Cape Government Health Emergency Medical Service ambulance enroute to Red Cross Children’s Hospital was stoned, along with several other motorists on the N2 near Borchard’s Quarry. The crew was then gun pointed and robbed of their belongings. They were transporting a critically injured eight year old patient who sustained severe head injuries after being involved in an earlier motor vehicle accident. A second ambulance was dispatched to transport the patient but the trauma to his head was so severe and he sadly  passed away at 12 noon at Red Cross Children’s Hospital.
