MOGADISHU, (CAJ News) – A Somali journalist has been arrested for exposing a regional president’s alleged involvement in a counterfeit money-printing scam.
Police arrested journalist Omar Saeed Mohammed in Garowe, the
administrative capital of Puntland, a semi-autonomous region of Somalia.
He has been detained without charge but it is apparent this is in
connection with a Facebook post Omar wrote alleging the involvement of
Puntland President, Abdiweli Mohamed Ali, in the counterfeit money
A fellow journalist who witnessed Mohammed’s arrest said police refused to provide any justification for the arrest, telling him they were acting on official government orders.
“They refused to say who had issued the orders,” said the witness.
Last month, security forces in Garowe also detained online journalist,
Ahmed Ali Kilwe, for two weeks without charge after he criticized the
headstrong president.
Angela Quintal, Africa coordinator of the Committee to Protect
Journalists, said authorities must immediately release Mohammed and stop detaining and harassing the media.
“The notion that police can arrest a journalist at any time, without
charge, on the apparent whim of officials, can only have a chilling effect on media freedom in Puntland,” she said.
Recently, TV journalist Omar Ali Hassan Serbiya, was arrested for coverage that “threatened the security and stability of Somaliland.”
Another journalist Mohamed Dirir was detained for days after asking a
“critical question” at a news conference.
