KINSHASA, (CAJ News) – THE whereabouts of four doctors that militia kidnapped in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) are unknown four years after their abduction. The armed group, Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), abducted the members of the Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF)/Doctors Without Borders team conducting an exploratory mission to assess medical needs in Kamango in North Kivu province during an attack on the village. While many other hostages escaped their jailers during the same period, there is still no news of Philippe Bundya Musongelwa, Richard Muhindo Matabishi and Romy Ya-Dunia Ntibanyendera.“Despite our efforts and the escalation in violence in DRC and more particularly in North Kivu, MSF has still not ascertained the whereabouts of our three colleagues,” MSF stated.“We continue our investigations, not only in DRC but also across its borders, and to support the families of our three missing colleagues.”The ADF continues to fuel a climate of terror in the region wedged between the Rwenzori Mountains and the dense forests of Virunga National Park where abduction is commonplace.Hundreds of people, most of them Congolese, Burundians, Tanzanians and Ugandans have disappeared, giving the conflict a regional dimension.
“MSF continues its inquiries but, without the help of local as well as regional social, economic and political stakeholders, the fate of our colleagues and hundreds of other people remains uncertain,” the doctors body stated.
Militias are widespread in the unstable DRC. In March, two human rights experts from the United Nations were kidnapped in the volatile Kasai and found killed weeks later. It is unclear whether militants loyal to a slain chief or the army murdered the foreign experts.
