NAIROBI, (CAJ News) – ENVOYS posted to Kenya are confident the East African country will hold credible polls in August.
A just-concluded National Elections Conference held in the capital Nairobi and a pledge by the main contenders in the presidential poll buoyed such confidence.
On Thursday morning, the Heads of Mission from international partners met officials from the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to pledge their support.
Envoys from Denmark, European Union, Finland, Germany, Italy, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland United Kingdom and United States attended.
“We congratulated the Commission on the important National Elections Conference held in Nairobi on 13-14 June, which allowed participants to discuss electoral preparations and to make clear their support for free, fair, credible, and peaceful elections,” the envoys jointly stated.
They welcomed the conference as an important sign of confidence in the IEBC and thus urged all Kenyans to continue to support the IEBC.
The envoys hailed the signing of the IEBC pledge to “peaceful and credible elections,” by Kenyans, including President Uhuru Kenyatta and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, the two rivals for the presidency.
Allegations of vote rigging and crackdown on media have marred preparations for the poll set for August 8.
Kenya has a recent history of violent polls.
A disputed presidential election outcome in 2007/08 left as many as 1 500 people dead and 600 000 displaced.
A unity deal by Mwai Kibaki, the incumbent who was declared the winner, and Odinga, who was appointed Prime Minister, ended the chaos.
