Striking soldiers instill fear in Ivory Coast

ivory soldiers2From ALEXIS DOUMBIA in Abidjan, Ivory Coast ABIDJAN, (CAJ News) – THE Government of Ivory Coast has managed to bring under control the insecurity triggered by soldiers protesting over salaries.The soldiers had in recent days quit their barracks and run amok brandishing their guns in public thoroughfares. Over 8 000 officers engaged in protest.A deal reported to be over USD15 000 per soldier (over R200 000) has been agreed.United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has commended the
government of the West African country for restoring security following the mutiny.“The Secretary-General welcomes the return to calm in Côte d’Ivoire following the unacceptable acts of violence committed by soldiers over the past few days,” said Stéphane Dujarric, spokesman for the UN head.The secretary-general expressed the UN’s continued support to the administration  of President Alassane Ouattara in its efforts tosustain the peace and stability in the country.This includes with the assistance of the UN operation in Ivory Coast and other international actors.The unrest took place as UNOCI prepares to complete its mission on June 30.The Security Council established the mission 13 years ago following a peace agreement between parties ts to a civil war.
