Sudanese tribalism Torture, rapeFrom RAJI BASHIR in Khartoum, Sudan
KHARTOUM, (CAJ News) – GOVERNMENT forces have raped at least six women, arrested and tortured over 40 men as operations to crush opposition support degenerate into genocide in South Sudan.
This is the aftermath of heavy fighting between government and opposition Sudan People’s Liberation Army in Opposition (SPLM-IO) forces across the Equatoria region south of the country.
The SPLM-IO is mainly made up of Nuer, South Sudan’s second-largest ethnic group.
This policy has resulted in the targeting of non-Dinka, hence the sexual violence against women and wanton arrest of men.
the political situation has been highly unstable amid increasing concerns about government attempts to target non-Dinka and promote Dinka domination since July 2016 when state and rebel forces clashed at the celebrations of the country’s fifth independence celebrations.
The clashes are linked to a calamitous fallout in 2013 when President Salava Kiir accused then-deputy, Riek Machar of plotting a coup.
Kiir has since dismissed a number of government figures, including Equatorians.
Antagonism between Equatorians and Dinka contributes to a decades-long push for greater autonomy in the Equatoria, an economic hub, the non-governmental Assessment Capacities Project, noted.
The organisation warned conflict would escalate between the Dinka and Equatorians and self-defence groups of other ethnicities alleging victimization in government operations.
