From JEAN KASSONGO in Kinshasa, DRC
KINSHASA, (CAJ News) – THE resurgent Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) is carrying out a campaign of deadly terror in the crisis-torn Central African Republic and Democratic Republic of Congo.
Civilians and United Nations peacekeepers are bearing the brunt of the insurgency, exacerbated by the activities of smaller rebel movements.
In northern DRC, forces of the Uganda-founded LRA are committing large-scale abduction raids.
Six civilians are unaccounted for after LRA forces abducted 23 civilians during two attacks southwest of Doruma in DRC’s Haut Uele province where 17 were later released.
The LRA’s abduction of 50 civilians in Gwane, Bas Uele province, recently eclipsed the combined number of abductions there in the previous four months.
In addition to LRA activity, armed pastoralists have abducted three Congolese men in the region.
Meanwhile, in the east of the equally-troubled CAR, LRA has been blamed for killing two Moroccan peacekeepers and injuring two others after attacking their convoy in Haut Mbomou.
Two soldiers from the African Union regional taskforce have also been killed during an ambush in Zemio.
Peacekeepers’ convoys have been ambushed six times since last October putting the safety of civilians and humanitarian workers at risk.
The Rafai–Mboki road has emerged as a death trap with most of the ambushes reported there.
