KINSHASA, (CAJ News) – THOUSANDS of civilians have been raped and endured gender-based violence as the humanitarian situation in the Central African Republic continues to deteriorate with the outbreaks of tension multiplying in several places.
United Nations Humanitarian coordinator for the Central African Republic, Dr Michel Yao, said the past year had seen 11 110 cases of gender-based violence and 2 313 incidents of sexual violence mostly targeting women.
The renewed violence between rival armed groups brings with it new population displacements and new humanitarian needs.
Bambari, declared a “weapons-free zone” by the UN mission, welcomed more than 26 000 displaced people in the space of three months.
In Kaga Bandoro in Nana Gribizi, 15 000 displaced people still live around the International Force base following the violence in November 2016. In the west of the country, while 15 000 people have taken refuge in Bocaranga.
Many remain incommunicado in the bush.
Overall, 2,2 million people -half the population-  need humanitarian aid.
“The perpetrators of this violence must not to lose sight of the harmful consequences of their confrontations on the civilians,” said Yao.
