Kaben, Kerio Valley and raidsFrom MARIA MACHARIA in Nairobi, Kenya
NAIROBI, (CAJ News) – ARMED bandits robbing cattle herders of livestock are defying a heavy police presence in Kenya’s Great Rift Valley, where 50 herders have been killed since last year.
This past weekend, the daring robbers numbering about 30 raided Kaben, Kerio Valley and Kipyepo where they drove away with 30 cows.
This is despite the deployment of least 400 police officers and 300 reservists to quell the violence between cattle rearers and the rampaging bandits in the region.
A man and a reservist have been severely injured during the ambush by armed men.
Police head Lemmy Njiru said police and reservists pursued the criminals but attempts were futile.
Last Tuesday, the bandits killed a man on the day deputy president, William Ruto, toured Kipchumwa to address the crisis.
Ruto warned the bandits.
“Government will not negotiate with these criminals killing women, children and stealing livestock,” said the deputy president.
The banditry coincides with a surge of land invasions by nomadic cattle herders at ranches in Kenya.
Last week, invaders shot dead prominent rancher, Tristan Voorspuy, a British national, dead at his property in the central Laikipia.
