Rhodes hosts three-day Transformation Summit

Story from: The Announcer

Rhodes University

Rhodes University will reflect on its academic project, role and purpose of the University and its sustainability at a Transformation Summit scheduled for Friday, 28 to Sunday, 30 July 2017 in Grahamstown.

The Summit also aims to mobilise input and recommendations from the University community on a range of areas including living and learning spaces, community, disability, gender and sexuality, budget, student funding, research, teaching and learning, visual representation and culture, alumni, language, labour and the institution.

In addition, central to the Summit discussions is the consideration of the name of the University – whether or not it should change. The Summit is part of a democratic consultative and inclusive process initiated by Council.

“It is important that whatever decision we take regarding all these key issues, we have a financially sustainable institution, a University worth the name and continues to provide quality education for young people,” said Dr Sizwe Mabizela, Vice Chancellor for Rhodes University.

The three-day summit will see a programme involving students, staff, alumni and various stakeholders led by the Institutional Forum, which is mandated to advise Council on institutional transformation matters.

“Through the Transformation Summit, we have an opportunity, collectively, to rethink and reimagine our place, purpose and value as an institution of higher learning. At the end of this Summit, we need to emerge with an institution that is even better than the one we have. A more resilient and sustainable institution, able to play its rightful role in the constellation of higher education institutions in this country. It is a great opportunity for us as a University to pull together and chart a new course for ourselves,” said Mabizela.
