CULINARY ADVENTURES: Korean-fusion In Chinatown

Story from: GOSSIP GUY

Hi sunshines,

Gossip Guy here. And boy am I hunnnnnnnnnngry!

You’ll probably also be after this. I love discovering new and interesting places to eat out, sometimes the more exotic and unusual the better. So when @Jodenecoza suggested Chinatown in Joburg for lunch during our shopping trip to Kensington to buy antiques [Well aren’t y’all very lah-dee-dah! – Ed.], I was keen. Even more excited when she told me it’s Korean fusion. #Steamyyummy

Across the road from the old China Mart City World undercover market in Bruma, where the Bruma Lake Flea Market used to entice me with its bargains galore, is now a two-storey mini-Chinatown. There’s shopping and nibbles. The eating bit comes in the form of a food court, a pretty clean-looking one at that… which is worth mentioning as Chinatown just up the road, on Derrick Street in Cyrildene, can give off some pungent odours and make even the most ardent fan of sizzling beef lose their appetite.

So I was glad that the food court was clean. The Korean fusion place, whose name I sadly didn’t note down, is in the far left corner and, on @Jodenecoza’s recommendation, I went with the butter fried beef rice, veggie springrolls (to share) and puffed rice snacks with ice cream inside. So delicious.

The place isn’t fancy but the service was great (very smiley, friendly lady behind the counter) and the food was delish. I have no idea if that beef and rice was fried in butter or the usual, more Asian-obvious oil but it was really tasty and that dessert: it was mostly vanilla ice cream but there was a small splash swirl of strawberry in there and I’m pretty sure it was soft serve ice cream all cosily wrapped up in this crispy puffed rice kind of cracker-thingmajiggy.

The puffed rice snack – not much to look at but looks can be deceiving

On the Gossip Guy food-review-o-meter, I’d give it a tasty 8 out of 10.

I’ll be back.
