Golden Globes 2016: Who I Want To Win…
Story from: GOSSIP GUY
Gossip Guy here, with some fearless
predictions wishful thinking.
TV’s in a good space these days. Between traditional network television and streaming services like Netflix, Amazon and Hulu, we’ve never had so much choice before. Ever…
And that’s reflected in the nominations for the 2016 Golden Globe Awards. Now, I love me some movies y’all, don’t get me wrong, but I reeeeeeeeeeeealllly love me some TV, so my list of who I want to win is a TV-only touchstone. You can access the full list of nominees here.
Before the Globes air on Sunday 10 January (with a rebroadcast the following night on M-Net in South Africa at 21:30), I’ve sifted and sorted, weighed up the good from the truly spectacular, plus factored in some awards ceremony politics (because, let’s face it: no one wants the same people winning every single year), to bring you this:
Gossip Guy’s 2016 Golden Globes TV Winner Wishlist
Best TV Drama
Game of Thrones, HBO
Mr. Robot, USA
Gossip Guy says: Normally, for me, Game Of Thrones would be a shoo-in but season 5 was, for me, their weakest season, with more emphasis on plot-driven drama than the characters. Plus don’t get me started on the Sparrows, who suddenly and for no reason had more power than even the king. Er, yeah right! Even Cersei’s long-awaited walk of shame was ‘meh’. So I want Empire to win this one for their spectacular first season.
Best TV Comedy
Mozart In The Jungle, Amazon Studios
Orange Is The New Black, Netflix
Silicon Valley, HBO
Transparent, Amazon Studios
Gossip Guy says: No Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt?? Really guys! Well, in that case, I choose Transparent, even though it’s more a dramedy than comedy.
Best Mini-Series or TV Movie
American Crime, ABC
American Horror Story: Hotel, FX
Flesh & Bone, Starz
Wolf Hall, BBC
Gossip Guy says: AHS: Hotel has come back from an awful season 4 but Fargo’s in it to win it.
Best Actress in a TV DramaCaitriona Balfe, OutlanderViola Davis, How to Get Away With MurderEva Green, Penny DreadfulTaraji P. Henson, Empire Robin Wright, House of CardsGossip Guy says: I tie here between Viola Davis, who already has Emmy love, and Eva Green who basically carries the brilliantly underrated Penny Dreadful with her incredible portrayal of the trouble Vanessa.
Best Actress in a TV Comedy
Rachel Bloom, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend
Jamie Lee Curtis, Scream Queens
Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Veep
Gina Rodriguez, Jane the Virgin
Lily Tomlin, Grace and Frankie
Gossip Guy says: Veep has won enough. #SorryNotSorry. And I (still) love it. But both the newbies here have my heart aflutter and me LOLing – I’d be happy with either Rachel Bloom or Lily Tomlin here.
Best Actress in a Mini-Series or TV Movie
Kirsten Dunst, Fargo
Lady Gaga, American Horror Story: Hotel
Sarah Hay, Flesh & Bone
Felicity Huffman, American Crime
Queen Latifah, Bessie
Gossip Guy says: Queen Latifah stands out the strongest – she’s most likely to win. But a little loving for Kirsten Dunst would be awesome.
Best Supporting Actress in a Series, Mini-Series, or TV Movie
Uzo Aduba, Orange Is The New Black
Joanne Froggatt, Downton Abbey
Regina King, American Crime
Judith Light, Transparent
Maura Tierney, The Affair
Gossip Guy says: With so little to do in season 3 of Orange Is The New Black, Uzo (love her!) takes a back seat. Let’s hear it for Angela from Who’s The Boss aka Judith Light.
Best Actor in a TV Drama
Jon Hamm, Mad Men
Rami Malek, Mr. Robot
Wagner Moura, Narcos
Bob Odenkirk, Better Call Saul
Liev Schreiber, Ray Donovan
Gossip Guy says: Rami Malek. Because wow, just wow…
Best Actor in a TV Comedy
Aziz Ansari, Master Of None
Gael García Bernal, Mozart In The Jungle
Rob Lowe, The Grinder
Patrick Stewart, Blunt Talk
Jeffrey Tambor, Transparent
Gossip Guy says: Having not seen Master Of None (full disclosure) and having hated Mozart In The Jungle, this one’s an easy pick for me: Patrick Stewart, who’s incredibly self-deprecating and not afraid to ‘go there’ for a laugh. Or a tear.
Best Actor in a Mini-Series or TV Movie
Idris Elba, Luther
Oscar Isaac, Show Me A Hero
David Oyelowo, Nightingale
Mark Rylance, Wolf Hall
Patrick Wilson, Fargo
Gossip Guy says: Idris is amazing as Luther but so was Mark Rylance in Wolf Hall. Tough call…
Best Supporting Actor in a Series, Mini-Series, or TV Movie
Alan Cumming, The Good Wife
Damian Lewis, Wolf Hall
Ben Mendelsohn, Bloodline
Tobias Menzies, Outlander
Christian Slater, Mr. Robot
Gossip Guy says: Tobias Menzies. Outlander needs some loving too!
